Retail and e-commerce software development in India: New e-commerce rules start on 1 January 2027. Your online store has to be ready.

From January 2027, discounts must show the lowest price of the last 30 days, and sponsored listings must be labelled. Imported goods must name the importer and country of origin, and every e-commerce business needs a yearly dark pattern self-audit. We build online stores, checkouts and seller tools that follow these rules and still sell well.

The sector

Retail and e-commerce, in numbers.

Selling online in India now means UPI and COD at checkout, and consumer rules that look closely at prices, listings and checkout design.

2,407 crore
UPI transactions worth ₹29.37 lakh crore were made in September 2026 (NPCI).
29%
of the 17,71,622 grievances made to the National Consumer Helpline in 2025 were about e-commerce (Department of Consumer Affairs, PIB, September 2026).
What the rules ask of you

01 Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Amendment Rules 2026 from 1 January 2027 A discount must show the prior price, meaning the lowest price in the 30 days before it. Sponsored listings must be labelled, search results must not mislead, and imported goods must name the importer and the country of origin. Complaints must be acknowledged within 48 hours and resolved within a month. Source
02 Dark Patterns Guidelines 2023 yearly self-audit from 1 January 2027 The CCPA bans 13 dark patterns, including false urgency, basket sneaking, drip pricing and subscription traps. From 2027, every e-commerce business must self-audit each year and display a certificate. In June 2026 the CCPA fined an edtech platform ₹5 lakh for a pre-ticked donation at checkout. Source
03 Product and seller details E-Commerce Rules 2020, amended 2026 Marketplaces must show seller details, returns, refunds, warranty, delivery, payment options and best before dates before purchase. Sellers must give the country of origin and their GSTIN or MSME registration number. Imported goods must show the full country name, as the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules require. Invoices must show the seller's name as large as the platform's. Source
04 GST for online sellers GST Council recommendations, 8 October 2026 The GST Council has recommended a simpler, automatic GST registration for small sellers who sell into other states through a marketplace warehouse. It also recommended 5 per cent GST without credit on delivery services for e-commerce orders. Both need notifications before they apply. Source
05 DPDP Act 2023 and DPDP Rules 2025 most duties due from May 2027 Customer names, addresses and order history are personal data. You need a clear notice for marketing consent, reasonable security, a breach notice to affected customers and answers to data requests within 90 days. Penalties go up to ₹250 crore. Source

What we will not claim.

We do not make your store compliant with the E-Commerce Rules, the dark pattern guidelines or the DPDP Act, and the CCPA does not approve checkouts. We are not a payment aggregator, courier or marketplace partner. Your lawyer checks your terms and your CA checks GST. We build stores and checkouts that apply the rules you agree, and keep records of prices, consents and complaints.

Retail and e-commerce questions

Frequently asked questions.

What do the January 2027 e-commerce rules mean for our sale banners?

When you announce a discount, you must show the prior price, which the rules define as the lowest price in the 30 days before the announcement. We store your price history and work out the prior price automatically, so every banner and product page shows the right figure without manual checks.

Which checkout designs count as dark patterns?

The CCPA lists 13, including false urgency, basket sneaking, confirm shaming, subscription traps and drip pricing. A pre-ticked add-on or a fake countdown timer can be enough. We review your store against the list, fix what we find and give you a checklist for the yearly self-audit due from 2027.

Can you reduce our COD returns?

We can help. COD orders confirmed on WhatsApp, address checks at checkout, prepaid offers through UPI and clear delivery dates often reduce return-to-origin orders. We track RTO by PIN code and courier, so you can see what works. We cannot promise a fixed drop in returns.

Can you sync our store with Amazon, Flipkart and ONDC?

Yes. We keep one catalogue and one stock count across your store and the marketplaces you sell on, using their seller tools or approved partners. That stops overselling. Listings carry the seller details and country of origin that the e-commerce rules ask for.
