Edtech and education software in India: Children's data and honest claims come before features.

Under the DPDP Act, a student under 18 needs a parent's verifiable consent, and apps may not track children or target ads at them. Coaching ads may not promise ranks or selections. We build learning apps, school systems and coaching platforms with these rules built in.

What the rules ask of you

The rules shaping your software.

The regulations and standards that change what your systems, website and data handling need to do, each with its date and a link to the source.

01 DPDP Act 2023: children's data main duties from May 2027 Anyone under 18 is a child. You need a parent's verifiable consent before processing a child's data. You may not track children, monitor their behaviour or target ads at them. Schools and colleges have a limited exemption for tracking needed for education or a child's safety. Penalties for these duties go up to ₹200 crore. Source
02 Guidelines for Regulation of Coaching Centres 18 January 2024 Coaching centres must register with an authority the state notifies. Tutors must be at least graduates. Centres may not enrol students who have not passed Class 10, or make misleading promises of ranks. Fees may not rise during a course, and fees paid in full are refunded pro rata if a student leaves. Fee details must be shared openly. Source
03 CCPA guidelines on misleading coaching ads 13 November 2024 Coaching ads may not make false claims about selections, ranks, success rates, guaranteed jobs or faculty. An ad that shows a successful student must state their rank, course and whether the course was paid. It also needs the student's written consent, taken after selection. Disclaimers must use the same font as the claim. Source
04 UGC rules for online and distance degrees ODL and Online Regulations 2020 Only universities recognised or entitled by UGC may run degrees online or by distance learning. UGC lists them, programme by programme, on its DEB portal. Edtech companies that market university courses should check that list first. Source
05 APAAR student ID One Nation, One Student ID APAAR is created against a student's Permanent Education Number in the UDISE+ system after a parent fills a voluntary consent form. The ID is then pushed to the student's DigiLocker. School systems that store APAAR IDs should record that consent too. Source

Not sure where to start? Talk it through with an engineer.

Thirty minutes with a senior engineer, free and with no obligation. Bring the problem, not a brief.

What we will not claim.

We are not approved by the Ministry of Education, UGC or any state, and no app is DPDP compliant on its own. We do not write ranking claims for you or promise exam results. Your institution stays responsible for safeguarding, admissions and advertising decisions. We build systems that support those duties and keep clear records.

Education and edtech questions

Frequently asked questions.

Do we need parental consent for students under 18?

Yes, in most cases. The DPDP Act treats anyone under 18 as a child and needs a parent's verifiable consent before you process their data. Schools and colleges have a narrow exemption for tracking needed for education or safety. The main duties start in May 2027, so build consent into new systems now.

Can our coaching ads show toppers and selection numbers?

Only if the claims are true and complete. Under the CCPA's 2024 guidelines, an ad that shows a successful student must also state their rank, the course they took and whether it was paid. It needs the student's written consent, taken after selection. Claims of guaranteed selection or jobs are banned. We build result pages around those rules.

Can an edtech company sell online degrees?

Only with a university that UGC has recognised or entitled for that online or distance programme. UGC publishes these lists on its DEB portal, programme by programme. We can build your platform and admissions flow, but check the university's status for each programme before you market it.

Is our students' data safe with you?

We build with role-based access, audit logs and data minimisation, and host in Indian cloud regions where data must stay in India. We sign a Data Processing Addendum before work starts and name every provider in it. Decisions about students stay with your staff. The system records those decisions but does not make them.
